Our First Fieldwork

By IIDAKENTARO

When the idea for VERNACLE was first conceived, the first place we visited was the studio and home of ceramist Yasuzo Kuroda.

Located on a small hill in Izu, this place can be said to be the origin of the "lifestyle" that the company's president, Yuya Matsumoto, experienced and aspired to.

In this spot overlooking Oshima and Toshima, the contrast of light and shadow in the garden is beautiful, and the fresh green leaves sway in the pleasant breeze. At the back of the garden, there is a small black "Water Exhibition Room" by Tadao Ando.

The buildings there fully absorb the unique atmosphere of the land and have a natural appearance as if they have been there since ancient times. They are never gaudy, but have spacious, open spaces and a subtle richness to them. While they are functional as homes and studios, you can feel a strong will that "this is how it should be here" in the size of the doors and each of their components.

We thought, "We want to live like this." And, "We want to increase the number of people living like this." It seemed to us that this would lead to a different kind of richness than the modern mainstream.
