About the work
I was obsessed with combining origami and blocks, and was influenced by my grandfather, a craftsman who made various fittings from materials around me. Since childhood, I have enjoyed creating new value from familiar materials. The nature and sea of Tokoname, where my studio is located, inspire me every day. I take the cold liquid glass in my hand and apply the natural colors to the surface with my fingertips. I try to express a primitive landscape, stroking it over and over again, and connecting deeply through my hands. It is as if the landscape purifies and washes away the history and background of the past. Covering the surface, I fire it again at a low temperature. Why does Jomon pottery feel soft? I feel that the question I had at the age of 18 is not due to technical or material strength factors. I think it is a return to memory of the primitive landscape and a dialogue with the past.
Jars and pots have been excavated in Tokoname from the Heian period, and I was inspired by these when creating this piece.
This is fired at a low temperature using the Raku ware method, and I hope you can see how soft it is.
