Koichi Onozawa, Black pottery (ceramic lacquerware)Cup

About Artist

Born in Toshima-ku, Tokyo in 1983.
After graduating from the Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center, he opened his kiln in Nakagawa-machi, Nasu-gun, Tochigi Prefecture.
He is currently active in Mashiko-machi, Tochigi Prefecture.

Koichi Onozawa has an atelier in Mashiko Town. His father collected pottery by contemporary artists, so Onozawa was always familiar with ceramic works. After experiencing pottery making during his student days, he began to consider becoming a potter. A characteristic of his work is the "totai shikki" (ceramic lacquerware), a legendary technique. Although it is a technique that disappeared with the development of firing technology, it was appealing to Onozawa, who originally preferred ambiguous expressions different from glazes in his kohiki and yakishime works.
