MONO-SOLUM 115 -Furo-gama Toshihide Ooai-

・ABOUT
Traced by earth, drawn by earth
Art pieces that trace the memory of regenerated earth
Bizen clay, originating from the Cretaceous period, has accumulated thousands of years of history.
The earth has quietly held these memories within itself. Eventually, the flame of the potter (kamabito) stirs its deep slumber, and guided by its own memories, the earth begins to draw unique expressions.

MONO-SOLUM
Mono / singular, Solum / soil, ground

The silent story told by Bizen clay
This fragment, standing between past and future, brings tranquility and depth to space, and subtly resonates with timeless memories in the hearts of visitors.

Toshihide Ooai, Furo-gama
Born into the Ooai family, one of the six kiln families of Bizen ware, this artist operates a kiln in Imbe, Okayama. At Furo-gama, he captures the subtle artistry of "hi-aji (fire flavor) and tsuchi-aji (earth flavor)" — the serendipitous results of earth and fire — in framed artworks. While preserving tradition, he also challenges himself to create expressions that blend with modern lifestyles and integrate different materials, exploring new possibilities for Bizen ware.

・frame artist/Mayo Yoshida

Born in Okayama Prefecture. After working at a frame workshop in Okayama City, she apprenticed under a frame craftsman in Kurashiki City, where she learned gilding and carving techniques. She became independent in April 2021 and began creating custom-made frames. Fascinated by 14th-century Italian frames, she traveled to Italy and studied carving and classical frame techniques at a frame workshop in Florence. She creates frames as artworks based on Italian frames from the 14th-15th centuries.
